LIT: FACTORY LAB

Project Summary

                  Engine: Unreal 4

                  Team Size: Solo Project

Factory Lab is a 3D puzzle game made in Unreal Engine 4. It contains three main levels and a tutorial level designed to teach players how to play the game. The main gameplay focus is to guide colored cores to the corresponding color box by rotating conveyor belts. I not only designed the puzzles and levels, but I also designed and built various 3D prop models and modular walls for the game and made textures and materials for the assets I made. Finally, I presented my design in the engine to stakeholders (professors), adjusted and designed my blueprints, and made UI interface in order to add sound effects.

Design Goal

Designed an Interesting Puzzle Game

  • Designed a simple, but interesting puzzle.

  • Gradually increased the difficulty and had good conveyance for player.

I designed a simple and interesting decryption game with three main levels. The first level utilized only one color to solve the puzzle. When the player turns the conveyor belt to make the yellow ball fall into the yellow box, the door to the next level can be opened. In the second level, pink is added in addition to the previous level’s yellow and the gate can only be opened when the player puts the balls of each color into their corresponding colors. When balls of different colors enter a conveyor belt of a different color, they’re destroyed.

Goal 1

Created Different Art Assets

  • Designed and made modular walls.

  • Created different props assets and made simple textures.

I designed and built all the walls and props in the entire level. First, I collected art references. I wanted to make a sci-fi style game, so I designed a lot of pipes and wires on the walls. I also made some props such as experiment boxes and machines for producing small balls.

I modeled in 3DS Max software and then exported it to the engine for adjustment. I also made some simple materials to make the whole project for complete.

Goal 2

Implemented Complex Blueprints in Level in the Editor

  • Made a functional conveyor belt.

  • Created feedback for when player reached each goal.

This is the conveyor belt’s blueprint. I can transport any object along the transport plane. At the same time, when objects that shouldn’t belong to this transport plane appear on it, they will be destroyed. For example, if there is a yellow ball on a blue transport plane, the yellow ball will be destroyed.

This is the level blueprint. The blueprint’s functionality here is that when the player solves the puzzle of each level, the door of the level will open. The difficulty is that I first have to make sure that the ball enters the box that corresponds with its color. There are multiple balls in the second and third levels. I added a counter to ensure that the door opens after the player puts all the balls in.
